Cat6 vs Cat6a: Which Should You Install for Your Business?

January 14, 20255 min read

Choosing between Cat6 and Cat6a is not just about speed. It is about future-proofing your infrastructure without overpaying for what you do not need today.

The Short Answer

For most small businesses (under 50 employees, single-floor offices), Cat6 is fine. For warehouses, multi-floor buildings, data-heavy environments, or any new build where you will not want to re-pull cable in five years, Cat6a is worth the extra investment.

What Is the Actual Difference?

Both cables support 10 Gbps, but Cat6a goes the full 100 meters at that speed while Cat6 tops out at 55 meters before signal degradation becomes a problem. Cat6a also has twice the bandwidth (500 MHz vs 250 MHz), better shielding against interference, and a longer useful lifespan in demanding environments. The tradeoff is that Cat6a cable is thicker and stiffer, which makes installation harder in tight conduit runs, and it costs roughly 20 to 30 percent more per foot.

When We Recommend Cat6a

  • Cable runs longer than 55 meters (common in warehouses, multi-floor buildings, and large open offices)
  • You are planning for 10 GbE to the desk within the next few years
  • High-density environments with lots of electrical interference (warehouses, manufacturing floors, medical facilities)
  • New construction where re-pulling cable later would be expensive or disruptive

When Cat6 Is Enough

  • Runs under 55 meters in a standard office environment
  • Budget is tight and the building is not going to grow significantly
  • Short-term lease where you will not own the infrastructure long-term

The Cost Reality

The price difference on a full office pull is usually between $500 and $2,000 depending on the size of the job. That is a small fraction of total infrastructure costs and a fraction of what it would cost to tear out and re-pull cable in three years. If there is any chance you will want 10G to the desk, or if your runs are anywhere near 55 meters, Cat6a is the right call.

Our Take

When in doubt, install Cat6a. We have pulled Cat6 for clients who came back two years later needing it replaced, and that conversation is never fun. The upfront difference is modest. The long-term difference is significant.
